I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful our experience was at Excellence Playa Mujeres, but I’ll try. From the moment we arrived at the lobby, greeted with champagne and cool towels, to the time we checked out (kicking and screaming, hehe), we were completely spoiled.
Mom and I visited this resort for a quick weekend getaway. A huge ‘Thank You’ to my husband, who took the weekend off work to spend some quality time with our 3-year old son. I must admit that I felt a little guilty leaving my two guys at home while I enjoyed a luxury vacation, however those feelings quickly faded as I realized how much my mind, body, and soul appreciated having that time to relax and be refreshed.
But I digress…everything about this resort makes you feel completely at home right away. Upon our arrival at about 1 PM, we were greeted with cool, scented towels and glasses of champagne to enjoy as we checked in. Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we visited Toscana, the buffet, for lunch. Servers immediately took our drink orders, and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Our glasses never went empty.
Once we returned to the front desk, our room was ready, and a porter, pushing our luggage, escorted us to our room. What a beautiful room! Two lovely, high double beds with fluffy white pillows invited us to stretch out. A long-stem rose was waiting for me on my bed. There was a beautiful sectional sofa with gorgeous pillows, and a huge jacuzzi tub in the far corner of the room. All of that leading to sliding glass doors, where our balcony sat, complete with a dining table and chairs, and a sunbed for two. 😉
The bathroom was nice; two double sinks, and a shower for two (I’m starting to see a theme here, wink!). There was no solid wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom, as you can see below. The only thing that was a little awkward was the setup of the toilet. It was behind a frosted glass door, however it wasn’t completely enclosed, if you catch my meaning. You’ll just need to coordinate that a bit if you need some privacy…
I have to mention the view! Normally, I enjoy an ocean view room, however we had a garden view and I was perfectly content. There was so much lush foliage, it was very soothing to watch the palm trees swaying in the wind and hear the birds chirping as we enjoyed the balcony space. So peaceful. I wouldn’t mind having that view again.
Now, on to the fun stuff!
The beach was lovely here. There is a constant breeze that keeps you cool while sunbathing. And yes, I do love to lay out in the sun. In most other places, I find myself laying out for a bit, then heading in the water to cool off. Didn’t have to do that here; the breeze kept me cool. The water was a little chilly for my liking anyway.

Beautiful! I loved seeing the lazy river that meandered around the entire resort. I saw a few people take a floating mat, place it in front of them, and leave their drinks there to push with them as they wandered the lazy river all day. That’s my kind of day! I just wish I had more time to take advantage of the pools.

Oh my gosh, the food! There are 10 restaurants onsite, and with a weekend stay, we didn’t have a chance to try everything. However, what I did try was fantastic! We made a valiant effort to experience as much as we could, and visited two restaurants each night. My favorite restaurants for dinner were Basmati (Indian), Chez Isabelle (French), and Flavor Market (Tapas).
We thoroughly enjoyed Basmati’s tasting menus. Mom and I each tried one menu, and shared. I liked the Tiranga menu most, specifically the Miloni Subji and the Lamb Rogan Josh. Perfect amount of spice, and complimented with a Tamarind Margarita (actually, I drank these all weekend, they’re delicious)! I finished the meal with a coconut mousse, and crema de tequila for sipping. Perfection 🙂
Beautiful touches at Basmati. We each ordered a tasting menu so we can experience a little of everything. #Basmati #wegotoo #browngirlbloggers #bookedthe #PlayaMujeres #RivieraCancun #ExcellencePlayaMujeres #luxurytravel #travelconcierge #destinationwedding #fabuloustravel #Cancun #Mexico #travelagent #travelbychrystal #beautifuldestinations #caribbeanhotspots #ig_mexico #mexicotravel #instatravel
At Chez Isabelle, I had a French Onion Soup and a filet. The soup was different from what you would find in the USA. It wasn’t topped with caramelized Gruyere, but instead, a flaky dome of puff pastry. The cheese (and plenty of it, just how I like it) was on the bottom. The filet was incredibly tender. I asked for it to be cooked medium, however it came out more medium-rare. It was so delicious that I didn’t mind. We got up to leave without dessert, and our waiter insisted that we at least try the creme brulee. I can’t resist a creme brulee, and I’m so glad we stayed for this one. Perfectly creamy with that crunchy caramelized sugar topping, garnished with beautiful raspberries and blueberries. One of my favorite desserts.
We tried as much as we could at Flavor Market. This is a fun place to spend time with a group of friends. Tapas are small plates of food, designed for tasting and sharing. Lots of flavor is packed into small bites. We thoroughly enjoyed the scallops, shrimp pipette, and beef in garlic sauce. The chef made a special dish that night: tender veal with a rich polenta. My suggestion: visit this restaurant for appetizers a few nights, and then head to dinner at another restaurant. It’s a fun way to explore many different flavors each night.
I enjoyed visiting Toscana, the buffet, for breakfast. There were so many choices, from a fresh juice bar, to an omelet station, a Mexican corner that featured traditional Mexican fare, to smoked salmon and peel and eat shrimp, and your breakfast staples such as pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, and fresh fruit. Each morning, I had freshly-made crepes with strawberries and Nutella, and Bellinis with peach puree and champagne. The Nutella was a little thin though; not sure why. That’s the only criticism I have. We did have room service breakfast that morning, and the French Toast was delicious!
The resort staff takes great care to make sure the grass, trees, plants, and flowers are in full bloom at all times. So many vibrant shades of green, pink, and yellow delighted your eyes throughout the resort. They had some interesting sculptures, and lovely fountains scattered among the grounds. It was so nice to stroll through the resort each day. The resort was spotless. We had a room that was set far from the lobby, and I didn’t mind the walk at all because of the beauty that surrounded us.
We were there to do a whole bunch of NOTHING, and we had a blast! There were lots of activities to keep you busy if you desired, including beach and pool volleyball, wine and tequila tasting classes, Latin dance lessons, and trivia contests. If you wanted a lazy weekend like we did, you could have that too. I will mention the spa. Please be sure to visit the spa and do the Aqua Wellness circuit. I felt so relaxed after that treatment that I didn’t really need a massage.
The resort shines because of its staff. Everyone we encountered was warm, friendly, and made every effort to ensure we had a beautiful stay.
All that to say, I’m already planning our return next year (maybe even twice!). The barefoot luxury of this resort is hard to beat.
